The breed started to develop in the early 1990s and only gained momentum after the establishment of the Meatmaster Sheep Breeders’ Society of South Africa on the 4th of February 2005 whereafter the Meatmaster breed was formally recognised in the government’s official newspaper, the Gazette, on 25 May 2007.

I purchased my first 21 Meatmaster ewes and three rams in 2009. Thereafter, I purchased about 130 ewes and ewe lambs from the leading breeders in South Africa, namely Clynton Collett, Henk Kearney, Danie Visser and other renowned breeders. From a group of 19 ewes whose records I have kept, I obtained 77 lambs in two years and lost only one lamb due to wean age. The Meatmaster, as a breed, has impressed me tremendously with their vigour, mothering ability, growth, meat traits, fertility, libido of the rams and strong herding instincts.

I purchased sons of the renowned rams Buccaneer (CRC 70417), Rooinek (CRC 70180) and Hercules (CRC 70224) from Clynton Collett. Later on I purchased Rooinek himself. I purchased some of Clynton’s old ewes, which presented me with two outstanding rams. One is a son of Buccaneer and the other a son of Rooinek. As a result of these purchases I have made great strides in my stud.

Performance testing together with phenotypic selection brings about much faster progress in breeding. It’s never the one or the other but always both.
